Interview with Mr. Alex Berner, a Participant in KAKEHASHI Project 2017

KAKEHASHI
Program in Japan

Mr. Alex Berner, who visited Japan through the KAKEHASHI Project in 2017, is working as an ALT, Assistant Language Teacher in Okinawa.

―Why did you participate in the KAKEHASHI project in 2017?

I participated in the KAKEHASHI Project in 2017 because I wanted to experience Japan and its culture before committing to applying, and ultimately accepting, a role on the JET Program as an ALT. It was a great opportunity to meet fellow college students from Japan.

―What is the most impressive part in the KAKEHASHI?

For me, the most impressive part in KAKEHASHI was how well the program was organized and how receptive everyone was to meet and exchange with the members. I really enjoyed the warm receptions we were given by the Japanese students when we visited and I only hope they enjoyed the reception we offered them when they visited us in the States!

―How was the support from JICE staff and coordinator through the project? If there is more to improve, please kindly advise.

The support from JICE staff and the coordinators was wonderful! We were given such wonderful hospitality. Our travel guides were extremely helpful, and it truly allowed all of us students to really enjoy the new environment and the new people! It took tremendous weight off the stress of traveling abroad!

―Please let us know your career after your participation in the KAKEHASHI Project. Did the KAKEHASHI Project make any effect on your career?

I am now an Assistant Language Tutor (ALT) with the JET Program. This is my first position held after graduation. The KAKEHASHI Project was really the deciding factor on whether or not I took this position. The KAKEHASHI Project gave me the opportunity to “test the waters” of life in Japan and I was extremely excited to take the position!

-Please let us know about your daily life in Okinawa.

I spend most of time in working at my assigned school: Okinawa Prefecture Kaiho Senior and Junior High School. I absolutely love working here and the teachers and students are brilliant and so kind! It has really made my transition to life in Okinawa a breeze. Outside of work, I take time to explore the island! I have visited the beautiful beaches and I am continuing to explore all Naha has to offer!

―What are you going to do after JET program is finished? Do you have any action plan to build more strong ties between Japan and the US?

After I finish the JET Program I plan on attending medical school back in the United States. Even though my career goals may not entirely align with Japan and Japanese culture, I want to incorporate aspects of Japanese culture into my daily life even in the States! I plan to remain active and involved in Japanese communities scattered throughout the United States. Additionally, the friendships I continue to make in Japan and in Okinawa will last past the JET Program and I of course will welcome them should they wish to come to the United States!

―Do you have any advice for future participants of JICE exchange programs?

My main advice would be to not let fear hold you back! It is incredibly scary to completely uproot and place yourself in a new country, however, it is totally worth it! Japan is absolutely wonderful! There are so many unique and interesting things about Japan that I believe everyone should learn and experience! And JICE exchange programs are wonderful and resourceful gateways into learning about Japanese culture and promoting exchange between the US and Japan!
